SCENOGRAPHY FOR THE PERSONAL EXHIBITION “BACKBONE” BY EVIJA ŠAITERE

The “Backbone” collection consists of ready-to-wear ensembles. Its primary source of inspiration is the bluish wax sculpture of Belgian artist Berlinde de Bruyckere, featuring a double spinal column. In the collection, spinal vertebrae are depicted in clothing as protrusions, simulating bone transformation in design elements, reconstructing new corporeal volume, and the skeletal support of the body. The developed fabric with relief recreates the idea of a vertebra and rhythmically repeats in various body zones. The clothing’s sculptural connection with space and architecture is achieved through falling and overlapping shadow areas, which harmonize and create an atmosphere with a specific rhythm. The purity of form and the aesthetics of space characterize the form and color tonality of the collection.

Evija Šaitere is a young Latvian fashion artist, a master’s student in the fashion art department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, and a recipient of Ināra Tetereva’s scholarship for the arts. In June 2016, the artist won and received the Best Design Award for Hong Kong at the International Design Competition “Fashion Future For Hong Kong 2016” with the “Backbone” collection.

A special music cycle for the “Timeless Salience” collection was created by composer Aija Alsiņa.
